Both are classified as <strong>neurodevelopmental disorders<\/strong> in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/book\/10.1176\/appi.books.9780890425596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition<\/a> (DSM-5)<\/em>, and both can be diagnosed in childhood or adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon for someone to be diagnosed with both ADHD and ASD, a change only allowed since 2013. In some cases, autism may even be misdiagnosed as ADHD. Understanding their similarities and differences is important for choosing the right support, whether that\u2019s <strong><a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"one on one counseling\" href=\"\/service\/one-on-one-counseling\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"21\">one on one counseling<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>adult therapy<\/strong>, or a combination of therapeutic approaches.<\/p>\n<h2>Similarities Between ADHD and ASD<\/h2>\n<p>Research shows a high rate of overlap:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>22\u201383%<\/strong> of children with autism also meet diagnostic criteria for ADHD.<\/li>\n<li><strong>30\u201365%<\/strong> of people with ADHD also show signs of autism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Common overlapping symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Difficulty with emotional regulation (managing distress, anger, frustration)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sensory_processing_sensitivity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sensory sensitivities<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Social challenges<\/li>\n<li>Executive functioning difficulties (trouble organizing tasks, managing time, or completing projects)<\/li>\n<li>Impulsivity<\/li>\n<li>Learning difficulties or disabilities<\/li>\n<li>Problems with sustained focus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Differences Between ADHD and ASD<\/h2>\n<p>While both can cause social difficulties, the reasons often differ:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ADHD-related social challenges<\/strong> often stem from impulsivity, interrupting, or difficulty paying attention during conversations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ASD-related social challenges<\/strong> may come from trouble interpreting social cues, body language, or tone, along with withdrawn behaviors and avoiding eye contact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other key distinctions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speech and Communication<\/strong> \u2014 ASD can involve speech delays, unusual speech patterns, or complete lack of speech, while ADHD typically does not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Activity Levels<\/strong> \u2014 ADHD often involves hyperactivity, trouble sitting still, rapid task switching, and frequent interruptions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus Patterns<\/strong> \u2014 ADHD can involve distractibility and shifting attention, while ASD may include intense focus on specific interests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repetitive Behaviors<\/strong> \u2014 Individuals with ASD may engage in repetitive movements or \u201cstimming\u201d (like rocking), while people with ADHD may dislike repetition and rigid routines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Treatment Approaches<\/h2>\n<h3>For ADHD:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Psychiatric medications<\/li>\n<li>Behavioral therapy<\/li>\n<li>Skills training<\/li>\n<li><strong>One on one counseling<\/strong> with a qualified <strong>therapist<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>For ASD:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Behavioral therapy<\/li>\n<li>Psychiatric medications<\/li>\n<li>Speech therapy<\/li>\n<li>Occupational therapy<\/li>\n<li>Social skills counseling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Getting a Diagnosis<\/h2>\n<p>If you or your child shows symptoms of ADHD, ASD, or both, start with a conversation with your doctor or a mental health professional.
