This might be the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a job layoff, a serious illness, or even the loss of a dream or identity.<\/p>\n<p>Loss is often the <strong>starting point<\/strong>\u2014a trigger for grief and, sometimes, depression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of loss:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A parent passing away<\/li>\n<li>A child moving out<\/li>\n<li>Divorce or separation<\/li>\n<li>Losing mobility or independence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What Is Grief?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/grief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grief<\/a> is the <strong>emotional and psychological response to loss<\/strong>. It\u2019s a natural part of being human. Grief shows up differently for everyone\u2014it might look like sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, confusion, or even temporary moments of peace or relief.<\/p>\n<p>Grief is not linear and doesn\u2019t follow a strict timeline. It often comes in <strong>waves<\/strong>\u2014sometimes overwhelming, sometimes quiet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Common grief reactions include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feeling empty or numb<\/li>\n<li>Crying unexpectedly<\/li>\n<li>Trouble sleeping or eating<\/li>\n<li>Longing for the person or life that was lost<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty concentrating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Grief is not a mental illness. But if it feels stuck or interferes with your life for an extended period, it may evolve into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/complicated-grief\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20360374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complicated grief<\/a> or trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/depression\/expert-answers\/clinical-depression\/faq-20057770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Is Depression?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/depression\/what-is-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Depression<\/a>, or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), is a <strong>mental health condition<\/strong> that affects how you think, feel, and function. While grief is usually connected to a specific loss, depression may not have a clear trigger.
